VMVLA celebrated Juneteenth on June 15th at the Josephine School Community Museum.

John Koehler of the VMVLA presented a Continuing Legal Education course on the Legal Impact of the Emancipation Proclamation dressed in period attire complete with tophat and coattails.

As the CLE adjourned, Ms. Norma Johnson from the Museum Board, descendants of the founders of Josephine City, and Judge Denise Callins of the Virginia Court of Appeals addressed the public on themes of community, freedom, and the power of history.

Public Remarks were followed by a Public Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, General Order Number Three, and the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenths Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.

At the conclusion of the events at the Museum, members of the public were invited to attend the Second Annual Juneteenth Celebration.

A recording of the VMVLA CLE was recorded and broadcast on June 19th, in observation of the holiday.
