Membership FAQ

Here is a guide to the benefits of being a member of the VMVLA

If you cannot find the answer here, please email the VMVLA at vmvla@vmvla.org

Are all CLEs offered by the VMVLA included as a benefit of membership?

All VMLVA CLE programs offered on Zoom® are available to VMVLA members as a benefit of membership. When the VMVLA hosts a live meeting, CLEs offered during the meeting will be simulcast on Zoom®. Members who wish to attend the meeting in person may be asked to pay a small registration fee to offset the cost of meals and social events. Also, the VMVLA will occasionally promote a CLE being sponsored by another bar association or group – if the sponsor of the requires a registration fee, the VMVLA will advise members that the CLE is not included as a benefit of membership.

I am a VMVLA member, but I was asked to pay a registration fee for a CLE on Zoom®. Why?

In order to have the registration fee waived, you must be signed-in to your VMVLA account. Be sure to login before registering for a VMVLA CLE on Zoom®. If the event you were registering for was sponsored by another bar association or group being promoted by the VMVLA, the registration fee was charged by the sponsor. If you were registering for an in-person meeting of the VMVLA, the registration fee was for the meals and social events at the meeting.

I accidentally paid a registration fee for a VMVLA CLE. Can I get a refund?

Members are not required to by registration fees for VMVLA CLEs on Zoom. Some CLEs are also offered to non-members for a nominal registration fee which is applied to the charitable contrubutions made by VMVLA with respect to that CLE. Beginning November 1, 2024, the VMVLA will no longer issue refunds to Members who pay registration fee for these CLEs as we are charged a premium by the credit card processor for refunds. Please be sure to sign-in to your account before registering for a CLE.

It is possible that the website is experiencing a connectivity issue.  However, it is also possible that your membership has expired – all memberships expire on October 31 of the current year unless renewed, and we will extend unrenewed memberships for a short grace period, after which your account will be moved to inactive status. If your membership has expired, you will need to rejoin the VMVLA. If you feel certain that your membership is current and are using the correct email address and password, please clear your browser cache, close and restart your browser, and try again.  If you still cannot login to yout account, please contact the VMVLA at vmvla@vmvla.org.

Once you have established your membership account, go to your membership dashboard. To find your dashboard, click on the drop down menu on the upper right of the homepage that says "Hi YOUR NAME" and select "Dashboard" (this is also where you can logout of the website). There is a video turtorial on accessing your member account.

On the Dashboard you will see your current user icon, your membership division, state bar number and email of record on the left, and your current membership expiration on the left.

Edit you member profile! From the Dashboard you can also edit your member profile.  You can either click the edit button in the "About Me" panel or select the drop down menu on the "Account" tab and select "Update Profile" (this menu also has the "Change Password" option). Here are somethings you can (and we hope will) do in your profile:

  • Check your Membership Division and Update It (changes to "Life" "Retired" and "Emeritus" status requires approval by the VMVLA)
  • Check and Update your Address and Phone Number
  • Identify your email address as either "Home" or "Professional"
  • Provide links to your website and LinkedIn Page
  • Tell us where you went to Law School
  • Tell us about the areas of the Law you practice in
  • Give a short biography so we can know you better
  • Describe your practice
  • Select your Directory Visibility (see below)

Please note that as your email address is your member ID. You cannot change your email address through your Member Dashboard.  To change your email address, please contact the VMVLA at vmvla@vmvla.org.

How do I add or change my profile picture?

To add a headshot, firm logo, avatar or other identifying image to your profile, go to your Member Dashboard and navigate to "Update Profile."  Click on "Browse" beneath your avatar (most likely a generic person image) and upload an image. Please note that this image will appear on your directory page and also will be used if you are listed as an officer, committee member, CLE presenter or in other places on the website where your participation in the VMVLA is celebrated. Keep it classy!

How do I check my current and past CLE registrations, due and other payments?

On the menu of your member dashboard you will see tabs for Donations, Events, and Payment History.  In the first tab you can see donations you have made through VMVLA to its supported charities. In the next, you can see the CLEs and Meeting that you have registered for and the Zoom Link (if applicable) to reach the meeting -- no more having to email the VMVLA for the email with the link you can't find! Finally, the last link will have a record of payments made of membership dues and meeting registrations.
